Last night I worked until 3am.
Not because I'd left it too late, but because I knew my husband was home the next day. He'd have the kids, I could sleep in, and I finally had a long, uninterrupted stretch to do the big piece of work that needed all of me at once. So I stayed up. I'm running on six hours today, and I'm okay with that. It was for something bigger.
This is what building a business after bedtime actually looks like. Not the highlight reel. The real thing.
It's short, inspired sprints in the quiet, just me and the glow of the screen. You blink and an hour's gone. It's tiring. There's a running "why am I still up?" that I answer by reminding myself of my why, over and over. And it's celebrating the small wins nobody else would notice. Like this website. I built it in pockets of stolen time. It isn't perfect, but it's real, it works, and I get to fine-tune it as I go.
Here's the honest bit, though. I wrestle with slow.
Part of me wants to hand chunks of this off to someone else, just to get it out into the world faster. But the thing that would speed it up is the exact thing that takes the time: getting what's in my head, out of my head, and to you. And I'd rather do that myself. Because this has my heart and soul in it, and that depth is the whole point. It's also what keeps me going on the nights I want to quit.
I won't pretend the perfectionist in me doesn't make it harder. I've watched friends lovingly duct-tape a product together, throw it into the world, and have it land beautifully for their people. I genuinely love that for them. I just can't do it that way. I need the pieces to make sense. I need them polished. That's something I'm still working through, some nights more than others.
And there's a whole layer nobody sees.
They don't see the meltdowns. The overwhelm. The tears, which, honestly, are their own kind of release. They don't see me lying awake asking "what am I actually doing this for? Am I making the right calls? Am I missing the moments right in front of me with my kids?" They don't see that I'm a homeschool mum too, planning tomorrow's lessons with one half of my brain while the other half runs the to-do list. {I've picked up some ways to carry all of it, and I'll share those as we go.}
So if you're reading this at 10pm, tired, a little guilty, building your thing in the cracks of your life, here's what I want you to hear.
Give yourself some grace. This doesn't have to happen on anyone else's timeline. You can still have all of it, it just might not arrive on the schedule you first pictured. And taking longer doesn't make it any less. It doesn't make it any less potent. It doesn't make it any less deep. It doesn't make it any less needed. It doesn't mean you'll move fewer people. It just means you'll get there a little slower, with all of yourself intact.
That's the trade I'm making at 3am. And I'd make it again tonight.
